清末中法战争时期，法国远东舰队司令孤拔率舰队侵犯镇海口，浙江巡抚刘秉章、提督欧阳利见、宁绍台道薛福成等亲率大军筑防御敌，重伤法军司令孤拔，迫使法军败退，使法舰北上骚扰威胁京津的企图遭到破灭。电影《镇海保卫战》就是以此为背景，再现了这场中国近代反侵略史上的重大战役。
