故事以20世纪格鲁吉亚农村生活为背景，叙述了少女玛丽塔的爱情悲剧。本片一大特色在于一系列色彩鲜明的形象，例如聪明勤劳的“法官”齐齐柯尔、不分昼夜寻找魔树的利奥斯、疯狂的“预言者”约拉姆、怪异的“学者”勃布拉等等。本片是苏联著名导演阿布拉泽三部曲中的第二部，改编自格鲁吉亚诗人列昂尼泽的散文诗集。影片通过这些鲜明的角色和一个悲凄的爱情故事，通透地展现了残酷的现实与虚幻的理想之间的矛盾。
