本片的背景是1939年至1944年间阿尔巴尼亚人民反对意大利和德国法西斯统治的斗争，是阿尔巴尼亚民族历史上最艰苦的时刻。当时，在阿尔巴尼亚南部吉诺卡斯特城里，由于叛徒的出卖，地下工作者米拉和女游击队员阿费尔蒂达同时被捕。在监狱中，在刑场上，她们不畏强暴，不受敌人的威逼利诱。最后，米拉和阿费尔蒂达宁死不屈，英勇就义。
