本笃会修道院是整个基督教最重要的纪念碑之一，它位于罗马和那不勒斯之间的卡西诺山。第二次世界大战期间，盟军决定用这种前所未有的暴力轰炸毁灭蒙特卡西诺修道院。这场战斗是二战中最严重的屠杀之一，5万人盟军特遣队、2万名德国士兵和数千名意大利平民在这场持续到春季的战斗中丧生。
