大正から昭和初期にかけて、漂泊と放浪に生きた自由律俳句の巨人・種田山頭火（たねださんとうか）。酒に溺れ、妻子と別れ、日々死を見つめる放浪の生活。句作に懸ける情熱と自由への憧れ、苦悩を、珠玉の俳句を散りばめて描く映像詩。当初、渥美清主演で脚本は執筆されたが、渥美清の体調が芳しくなくフランキー堺が演じることになった。第３０回モンテカルロ・テレビ祭シルバーニンフ賞、最優秀男優賞（フランキー堺）を受賞。
