回到家乡柏尔马拍摄的《革命之前》，是贝托鲁奇首次在人性探讨以外加进政治意识的作品。影片描述一个中产阶段的知识青年如何徘徊在理想与现实之间的犹豫感。他想和人谈革命，谈感情，但当他爱上他的姨母，却为这种感情觉得内疚和痛苦不安。终于他斗不过现实，和一个自己不大喜欢的少女结婚。影片虽不是贝托鲁奇的个人自传，但在电影里他却尽现上世纪六十年代的时代氛围，年少气盛的他在片中绝对是火气十足。
