窮困潦倒的紐約演員維克為了謀生不惜裝成盲人在路上乞討，但卻被安娜和先生拆穿，失意的維克於是興起自殺之念，偏偏在街頭碰上歹徒持刀搶劫，一心求死的維 克反倒嚇了搶匪傑利一跳，兩人遂成為朋友。本片是李安在紐約求學時的作品，透過主角和童年美好記憶的相互對話，來呈現人們如何在現實和理想的差距間取得平衡。
