二次大战初期，艾丽斯的丈夫被逼自杀，而身为犹太人的艾丽斯被爱恋着她的法国人热罗姆偷偷带到了法国，住在他的好友夏尔家中。早年丧妻的夏尔渐渐喜欢上了艾丽斯。而热罗姆由于抵抗组织的工作，很少呆在她的身边，艾丽斯难以选择。一次，夏尔因为艾丽斯而遭到德国人的毒打，也因而得到了她的爱。热罗姆伤心而去，不慎被捕。在感情与恐惧的压力下。艾丽斯离开了夏尔，而夏尔也投身到了抵抗运动中。
