新文化运动是20世纪早期中国文化界中，由一群受过西方教育的人发起的一次革新运动，是中国历史上一次空前的思想的大解放运动。陈独秀、胡适等人是新文化运动的核心人物，1919年5月4日前夕，陈独秀在其主编的《新青年》上刊载文章，提倡民主与科学，批判传统纯正的中国文化，传播马克思主义思想。为国民的思想解放做出了巨大贡献。然而他却在一生当中数次被捕，为中国的革命付出了巨大的代价。
