本片讲述的是三位主人公，因为神秘的“抹大拉的玛丽亚”而相互认识的故事。声名狼藉的导演托尼正在拍摄一部关于耶稣的电影，这部电影极端地描写了教士们的阴暗和狠毒，所以在上映的时候备受指责。电影中的女主人公玛丽在扮演完抺大拉的玛丽之后，被这个角色所感染，并前往耶路撒冷开始了一段启迪灵魂之路。同时在纽约，一个叫泰德的电视记者正在准备一支探索耶稣精神的纪录片。这三个人物的命运就戏剧性地走到了一起。
