本片是影星彼得·乌斯蒂诺夫第五次扮演比利时大侦探波洛，在片中，波洛又一次充当了谋杀的见证人。这一次是在已退出舞台的著名演员查尔斯·卡特莱特家。牧师巴宾顿喝了一杯鸡尾酒后突然死于非命。他的死因还未查明，卡特莱特的挚友斯特兰奇医生也倒毙于自己家的一次宴会中。应其心爱的姑娘蛋蛋之约，卡特莱特开始调查这两起离奇死亡事件，波洛也不请自到地成为侦探小组的一员，并且成功地揭露了凶手。
