本片故事发生在巴黎公社后的希腊，片中的亚历山大原本是一个土匪，后演变成民间英雄。他从监狱逃脱后，劫持了几个英国贵族，开出的“赎金”是地主将土地归还给农民。公社成立后，社会主义的理想被内讧所取代，一群意大利无政府主义者、激进份子以及只有信仰没有根基的人士为了抢班夺权不择手段。
