在某个饱受内战摧残的东欧城市，主角路德维克（山姆尼尔）原本是共产主义忠实的信徒，后来因为深以自己的作为为耻，转而在动物园工作，过着孤僻退缩的生活。然而在一次猛烈炮击后，动物园的员工都逃到别处避难，只剩下路德维克和警卫及兽医愿意继续留下来照顾动物，等待外界派人来救援。就在军队进驻不到几天，警卫和兽医相继丧命，只剩下饱受要挟的路德维克。这时，有一对母子逃亡到了动物园的门口，路德维克逼不得已只得收留了他们，并因此不得不开始重省自己的人生。
