博凯汗国（1812年-1847年）是由哈萨克小玉兹托烈部贵族博凯苏丹建立的臣服于沙俄的傀儡汗国，历经四代可汗。本剧讲述了第三任可汗江格尔-克烈汗（1823年-1845年在位）在推动哈萨克草原百姓学习俄罗斯西方先进文化、处理部落勋贵间权力争斗时所做的努力，以及在面对逐步蚕食草原的沙俄殖民者时的矛盾与无奈心理。
