一封一百二十年前的信件，引出一个历史谜团：1901年，美国哥伦比亚大学校长收到一封捐款信，信内捐赠12000美金，用以在哥伦比亚大学建立汉学系，而来信的人是一位中国人，他的名字叫做“Dean Lung”，多译作“丁龙”。当时的12000美金是一笔巨款，相当于今天的数十万美金，丁龙的职业却是一名的仆人。
