松本清張の同名小説を、名匠・衣笠貞之助が映画化。徳川十二代将軍・家慶の頃、隠居した前将軍の権勢が今だ幅を利かせているなかで、世継ぎ問題をめぐり、腐敗堕落した大奥と幕府内部が繰り広げる派閥抗争を描く。大道具や小道具にこだわる衣笠の注文を受け、美術担当の西岡善信が、江戸城内や市街をぜいたくなセットで再現している。
