《鱼、缸》讲述了娜塔莉·宋（17岁）和她的童年伙伴乔安妮·陈在大学第一个学期过后回到陈家一起庆祝中国新年的故事。在这曾经备受欢迎如今却略带异国反感的节日里，娜塔莉也踟蹰在对乔安妮的爱慕和双方家庭对她们紧张的关注里。借着程式般的客套话和一只无辜金鱼的无意协助下，乔安妮向来多疑的母亲黛博拉，威胁娜塔莉，让她结束与她女儿之间的恋情。第二天早晨，挣扎于黛博拉未说出口的最后通牒，娜塔莉驶回了学校。
