《黄樱花的来信》是河濑直美的朋友日本著名摄影及电影评论家西井一夫（Kazuo Nishii）得知身患胃癌之后，请河濑用摄影机为他记录下自己走向死亡的全过程，河濑不仅是镜头背后手持机器的拍摄者，同时也不断地和西井谈话并鼓励他，而西井也会用相机拍下河濑工作时的样子，因为他希望这部影片除了自己之外也能让其他所有人看到，西井死于零一年十一月，时年只有五十五岁，而通过这些两年前的影像，观众在无限伤感的同时也深深记住了这位早逝的大师。
