路易斯是个悉尼的戏剧导演新手，他得到的第一份工作是参与悉尼市说什么对精神病人康复计划，让精神病人演出一场歌剧。该计划一开始就被一个叫罗伊的病人弄得鸡飞狗跳，他狂想自己是莫扎特。没有一个病人会唱歌，也没有人懂什么是歌剧。经历了若干的闹剧，演出总算开始了。演出过程中出现了很多事先未曾预料到的情况，最终都用了不可思议的疯狂方法解决了。演出得到了极大的欢迎。
